NASA took steps to improve the astronauts' chances of survival should such a mishap occur. For the first time since the summer of 1982, the crew left the launch pad ensconced in bulky space suits, each partly pressurized and equipped with an oxygen tank, a parachute and an inflatable raft. In addition, a new emergency escape system was designed to give the astronauts a chance to leave the orbiter quickly in the event of a "benign disaster" after the boosters had fallen away. In such a crisis, the crew would jettison the huge external fuel tank and stabilize the winged...
Thursday morning, as I sat in front of the television watching NASA technicians worry the Discovery through its countdown, I ate a star for breakfast. The star was in the form of a waffle. It consisted mostly of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen, with a sprinkling of other elements. Except for the hydrogen, those atoms had been forged in a star that exploded and died long before our sun and solar system were born. The hydrogen was made in the big bang that allegedly began the universe. Some astronomers think that it was on dust grains floating in interstellar space...
...foreigners; or, when the foreigners get tired of spotting us, interest rates will shoot up, and we'll have a recession; or, as the trade deficit narrows, domestic and export demand will combine to create inflation; or, the burning of Brazilian rain forests will deprive the world of oxygen, and we'll all choke to death; etc. But the sky hasn't fallen. And trying to persuade people it's going to fall any minute is probably not the best way to build a consensus on the next step...
...more and more crack-damaged infants -- many of them premature -- a clearer picture of the effects of the drug on the fetus is emerging. It is not a pretty one. Because a mother's crack binge triggers spasms in the baby's blood vessels, the vital flow of oxygen and nutrients can be severely restricted for long periods. Fetal growth, including head and brain size, may be impaired, strokes and seizures may occur, and malformations of the kidneys, genitals, intestines and spinal cord may develop. If the cocaine dose is large enough, the blood supply can be cut so sharply...
From Mandalay in the central plain to Moulmein on the Andaman Sea, Burma burst into flames last week, the spark provided by protest and bloodshed, the oxygen by rumor. In Sagaing, a city of 70,000 in the center of the country, security forces opened up with shotguns on a crowd of 5,000 that was converging on a police station, and 31 people were reported killed. In the suburbs of Rangoon, the capital, three policemen were reported to have been beheaded by enraged mobs. Word of mutinies by military units in the north and east flickered through the country...
