...Wilson, 38, and Ronald Beech, 51, to don safety gear and board the Boeing 737 to aid the frenetic evacuation. The firemen had just entered through the door over the right wing when the jet's rear was rattled by an explosion, perhaps caused by the ignition of the oxygen tanks that supply the plane's emergency masks. Seconds later, another blast, closer to the front, rocked the aircraft. The impact swept Wilson off his feet and backward into Beech, saving Wilson from being blown out of the plane. Like 79 of the flight's 83 survivors...

...research, Shortliffe boiled down everything he knew about diagnosing infectious blood diseases and meningitis into about 500 "if-then"rules. Rule 27, for example, said that if an organism found in a patient's blood is rod shaped, gram- negative and able to survive in the absence of oxygen, then there is a strong likelihood that the organism is a type of bacteria called Bacteroides. In tests that applied these rules to cases reported in the medical literature, MYCIN was eventually able to diagnose as well as or better than most medical experts...

...over Niagara Falls last week. Lying inside two pickle barrels ringed with giant inflated inner tubes and layers of fiber glass, the part-time bartender from Barrington, R.I., is the seventh known person to go over the falls and survive. Trotter, who carried a two-way radio and two oxygen tanks in the event he ran into trouble at the bottom of the falls, says he took the plunge "to get recognition as a stunt man." As far as the Canadian authorities are concerned, he has achieved that goal. He is scheduled to appear this week before an Ontario court...

...finally moving in with friends. On the night of April 14, she apparently swallowed a number of tranquilizers shortly before drinking several gin- and-tonics with friends at a tavern. & Suddenly she fell unconscious. Seeing that she had stopped breathing, her friends called an ambulance. She was given oxygen and put on a respirator, but she never regained consciousness. After Karen had remained in a coma for three months with no prospect of recovery, her parents asked her two doctors to take her off the respirator and let her "pass into the hands of the Lord"; the doctors refused. DIED. Cornelis Bernardus van Niel, 87, pioneering Dutch-born microbiologist who in the 1930s formulated the first correct chemical theory of photosynthesis, the all important process by which green plants convert water, carbon dioxide and light energy into carbohydrates and oxygen; in Carmel, Calif. At Stanford University, Van Niel worked with bacteria, some of which also perform a kind of photosynthesis, to derive his own general equation; in the 1940s experiments using isotopes of oxygen with different atomic weights traced the course of the chemical reactions and proved he was correct about green plants as well...
