...citizens who intend to sell illicit drugs in Arizona anyway are now obliged to get a $100 state license from the department of revenue. Still more curious, the law that went into effect last month requires that an official, yellow $10 tax stamp be stuck to every 1-oz. bag of marijuana sold, and a $125 blue stamp to each 1-oz. parcel of cocaine (or any other illegal drug). What is more, the revenuers must keep the names of all licensees confidential; otherwise the statute would violate the constitutional protection against selfincrimination...

Even so, only a dozen Arizonans have so far asked for license applications. Not that Arizona expects many dope dealers to become licensed. The state wants to levy fines, $10 per oz. of pot and $125 per oz. of coke, on untaxed drug caches seized by police, regardless of the outcomes of criminal prosecutions. Last week came the first case: a man was charged with "possession for sale" of 247 lbs. of marijuana and assessed $39,520 for having no license or stamps...

There is yet another newcomer to the frozen scene: tofutti. As its ungainly name suggests, it has a powdered soy base, no lactose, butterfat or cholesterol, and contains only 128 calories per 4-oz. scoop, vs. as much as 325 for a premium dairy ice cream and 280 for gelato. A sellout among celebs and fast-trackers from Manhattan to Honolulu, this noncream ice cream, which comes in five flavors, actually tastes good. Best of the batch: banana pecan...

Into a small room of the Baudelocque Maternity Hospital marches a nurse bearing a tiny, wrinkled infant named Gery. He is four days old and weighs 6 lbs. 6 oz. The nurse carefully deposits Gery in a waist-high steel bassinet that stands next to a computer. The computer is attached to an empty nipple. The question to be tested: Exactly what sounds can young Gery recognize...

Like The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Concert is an odyssey of sorts through a magical land. Unfortunately, however, the plot of this musical is not as refined as the orderly progression down the yellow brick road. Instead Alice in Concert is rather densely packed with the musical numbers seeming to follow a patchwork order that lead to a somewhat muddled end. But the cast overcomes this one foible in the material, treating each number individually without trying to make each song blend into a climactic conclusion--which really never comes. Instead this production is more like a musical cabaret...
