...debating point, and perhaps unresolvable. Admiringly, Conductor Seiji Ozawa says that "Slava I doesn't interpret, he feels. His music is really his character. He is conducting his life." His performances of the Schubert Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano and the Schumann Cello Concerto are typical. The phrasing and pastels of dynamics in the Schubert expose a bold lyricism that would have astonished?but probably pleased?the composer. As for the Schumann, Leonard Bernstein, who recorded the piece with Rostropovich, confesses that he would just as soon not do it again in quite the same fashion. "Slava takes enormous freedoms...

Written for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, it is enormously theatrical, punctuated with expectant pauses from the first fanfare to the last triumphant Jota. Ozawa leads a bright, brassy performance of the Fandango, Seguidillas and Farucca. Teresa Berganza fans will only wish that she had more to sing...

...Waart conductor, Philips). Another up-and-coming pianist is Ana-Maria Vera of Washington, D.C. The joyous innocence with which she attacks these lighthearted concertos is at once admirable and touching. So is her sparkling technique and rapport with Maestro De Waart, the Dutchman who is succeeding Seiji Ozawa at the helm of the San Francisco Symphony. Ana-Maria, born in 1965. was eleven when this recording was made...

Arthur Fiedler, conductor of the Boston Pops, who handed the microphone over to Ozawa last week, declared that the freedom, peace, and music that made Tanglewood a favorite tourist resort area in the state (second only to Cape Cod) would be destroyed by the prison installment. "It's taken many years to build up a facility like Tanglewood," Fielder said. "To place a prison across the road from it would ruin the whole thing overnight...
