...release of Richard Bach's "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" marked a true publishing phenomenon; 32 million copies have been sold in 39 languages. Now Bach is back, working on an unlikely new series of books called "The Ferret Chronicles," starring a band of "intelligent, pacifist ferrets who live and work in a world alongside of their human counterparts." The first two installments, "Rescue Ferrets at Sea" and "Air Ferrets Aloft" will be published on June 25. Will his readers find skunks' furry first cousins as appealing as seagulls? Stay tuned...

...nation without the option to object. But this year, as Israel spirals ever further away from peace, Geffen draws his generation closer and the power of Geffen’s music to move and convey his message is clearly not dependent on language. This fall, the diehard pacifist and conscientious objector even joined the army, if only as an entertainer for the troops...

...homes 20 years ago as the MTV generation entered the world. Yet the Keatons were by no means a stereotypical yuppie family, let alone a typical sitcom family. The Keaton parents were hippies to the bone—Elyse a folk-singing flower girl and Steven a draft-dodging pacifist. To their dismay, they birthed four yuppies-to-be, led by one Alex P. Keaton, a card-carrying Young Republican with a blazer over his shoulder, a tie around his neck and a picture of William F. Buckley on his wall...

He became so vexed at the violence he saw on the rink that he confronted the man who had volunteered as referee, Michael Costin (6 ft., 156 lbs.), for allowing it. Costin snapped back, "That's hockey." The two men scuffled, and Junta left...

...photos of the Taliban soldier being murdered were the saddest things I have seen in a long time. War is truly senseless and vile. I'm not a pacifist, but I am opposed to those who would proclaim that there is something glorious or heroic about going into battle. If war was necessary in Afghanistan, so be it; but I urge everyone who says it was to look closely at the man who is being brutalized in these photos and remember that when violence is institutionalized, this kind of madness will erupt sooner or later. I don't usually consider...
