Sadly, this double edge is somewhat scarce in Love, Love, and Love. In far too many of these vignettes. Bernhard sounds like a Brat Pack novelist who thinks spare descriptions of lonely, confused people having sex, taking pills and spending money are inherently interesting. The longer pieces are rarely as insightful as the brief snippets, and the only identifiable story line--involving a disgruntled Parisian woman and her violent, international love life--falls particularly flat...

...Nature's barroom brawlers, swiftly finishing their business and heading for the door, floods tend to behave more like unwanted houseguests: they park themselves in the living room, tear up the furniture, and generally make a nuisance of themselves for weeks or months before finally having the decency to pack up and hit the road. That's not good news for residents of the Mississippi River Valley, who long after floodwaters have crested will play host to a chocolate-colored inland sea sprawling across the spine of the Midwest -- a stagnant, festering stew of industrial waste, agricultural pesticides...

...plan nonetheless appears to be a long way from finished. Some things have been decided: there will be a cigarette tax to finance the plan, most likely $1 a pack, and some kind of employer contribution that will look like a tax. Maybe a tax on doctors and hospitals...

...cream cakes are one of their specialties, and are fun for dorm birthday parties. There's freezer full of different variations, but your best bet is to call ahead to make sure they have one with your favorite flavor. Another freezer stocks pre-packed pints and quarts, although the offering usually resembles discount outlets stores--they only seem to have the least popular flavors, such as banana and strawberry and vanilla twist. They'll charge you more to hand-pack some real ice cream...
