...Zealand-born Cherry Bishop began her career in Australia, where she received training in dress design at the Sydney Institute of Technology. After making a name for herself by selling her fashions at the local Paddington flea market, she moved to New York in 1989 and the following year opened her own boutique, Halo, in the East Village. While Halo gained notoriety as one of the most fashion-forward destinations in the area, Bishop continued her studies in 1995 at Fashion Institute of Technology...

...Japanese Wrestlers by a Sink, 1983-87. (The "Japanese wrestlers" of the title are not real sumo contenders, but fragmentary pictures of them pinned to the wall.) Coming only 11 days after the I.R.A. lobbed mortar shells at 10 Downing Street, the bombings aim at sustaining...

In San Francisco holiday shoppers were making a beeline for the free merry-go-round and other rides on the roof of the Emporium. Across America, retailers are trying all sorts of stunts to get folks inside their stores between...

Toys that catch fire are another worry. Americans for Democratic Action, a Washington watchdog group, tested 18 stuffed animals and found that 13 of them, including Mattel's Baby Mickey Snuggle Pal, Paddington's 30th Anniversary bear from Eden Toys and Playskool's Big Bird, are flammable, even though they meet existing federal and industry standards. Manufacturers say they have had few complaints and would have to use toxic chemicals to make the toys fully flame-retardant...
