Loeffler's "A Pagan Poem" is of special interest also. From 1885 and 1903 he lived in this vicinity and held a post as second principal violin in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, after which he resigned to devote himself to composition. He was born in Mulhouse, Alsace, in 1861, coming to America as a young composer-violinist. He is one of the earliest exponents of Impressionism in America, but his feeling for melodic line is too strong to identify him exclusively with this French school. He exerts in his writing a fascinating play of orchestral color and unusual rhythmic invention...

Suddenly, last fortnight, Cardinal Innitzer's palace was sacked by an obviously stage-managed Nazi mob. Last week the Cardinal was, to Viennese Nazis, a "black dog," a "traitor," a "political priest." To the rest of the Catholic world he was a hero. All this was because he had advised Ostmark Catholics to proclaim their faith, and had spoken up for religious marriages...

Germany's outstanding pagan philosopher is Dr. Alfred Rosenberg, erudite and devious "ideologist" to Adolf Hitler. Last week a speech which he recently made in private to the Reich Culture Chamber was published in London. It showed with crystal clarity that not only German Jews but Protestants and Roman Catholics have reason to fear Alfred Rosenberg. Excerpts...
