MISS U.S.A. BEAUTY PAGEANT (CBS, 10-11:30 p.m.). One of the nonevents television does so well, this 18th annual competition comes from the Miami Beach Auditorium. June Lockhart is hostess; Bob Barker emcees...
Shakespearean comedy, even a play as nice as this pageant of misrepresentation and manipulation, needs to survive on a modern stage. Mr. McBain has apparently understood this requirement, but his intermittant attempts to provide are the sorts of cures that kill. Where the play cries out for a locale--a definite fix in time and space--he has staged it with settings as homey and identifiable as the mountains of the moon, and costumes suggestive of a Bulgarian re-make of Flash Gordon. The addition of a sort of light show-cyclorama, beautiful as it may be in the abstract...
...Ferguson in a tarnished Carol Channing wig, he--or, as you begin to accept the play's terms, she--is an irrepressible performer, a one-man version of a Hasty Pudding show. The jokes are bad in a great, extravagant way. (One prisoner, dressed as Portia for a Christmas pageant, lamely explains away the gown he is wearing with, "It's from The Merchant of Venice." Queenie's answer: "Well, take it back then." All right, so you had to have been there.) The point is, if you're expecting merely refined sarcasm, this ain't The Boys...
Carnaval, as everyone knows, is the time when Brazil plunges into the world's biggest binge, a wild four-day pageant driven by the intoxicating beat of the samba. Yet there is a slightly unreal air to Brazil this week, as carnaval dances toward its pre-Lent climax. Since the military crackdown last December, Brazilians have had to put up with a tough, moralistic, even prudish regime. While revelers...
Total Theater. A space opera for children, Menotti's Help, Help, The Globolinks is as different from his 1951 Christmas pageant Amahl and the Night Visitors as a shepherd is from an astronaut. The plot centers on the invasion of Earth by a race from outer space known as Globolinks. They speak a kind of pidgin-electronese, and their touch can turn a human into a Globolink within 24 hours. Though the Globolinks are immune to man's weapons, it turns out that they are allergic to the sound of music. After a number of close encounters, they...
