...happened back on June 24. Watching it again only a week before she will have to knock 'em dead at the final contest in Atlantic City, Christine Louise Acton has to laugh. But nervously. She is 23. On June 24 she struck a bargain with the Miss America Pageant system. She accepted a job as Miss California, 1978. She knew it would take up most of her time, patience, energy and privacy for a whole year. In return for a chunk of the $1 million plus in scholarship money given by Gillette, Kellogg, Campbell Soup and other companies...
...Sistine Chapel at 6:24 p.m. on Saturday, it looked white?the traditional color to signal that the secret conclave within had elected a Pope. But could it be true? Not likely?not on the opening day of the largest, most complex gathering of Cardinal electors in the long pageant of papal elections. Sure enough, with dusk beginning to enfold the splendid statues and pillars of the Bernini colonnade, the smoke turned blacker, then gray. Despite the Nazi Holocaust, the Oberammergau Passion Play, Bavaria's decennial Catholic folk pageant, has gone on using an 1860 text that portrays Jews as Shylocks and Christ killers. In February the town council voted to use that version...
...week Rockefeller Center's Marshall sadly admitted that the proud landmark now faces the same pathetic destiny that has over taken hundreds of other moviehouses, big and small, in recent years. By present plans it will shut down this week, reopen in March to offer its traditional Easter pageant, and then close for ever the following month. The reason, naturally, is money. The theater lost $2.2 million in 1977, and officials figure it would lose $3.5 million this year if it stayed open. The Music Hall needs to take in $176,000 a week just to cover operating over...
...Farah onto the South Lawn, trouble broke out. The anti-Shah faction charged through the lines of mounted police and headed for the pro-Shah bleachers, armed with the handles of their placards and wooden two-by-fours that had been piled up for use in the annual Christmas pageant on the Ellipse. As the President began his welcoming remarks, police struggled to keep the two factions apart. The large white welcome banner was ripped to shreds. At that point, the wind carried the first acrid whiffs of tear gas used by police to quell the outbreak toward the ceremonies...
