...base-ball victory of Saturday last was such as to make the college justly proud of its representative team. To the 'varsity nine we give our heartiest congratulations on their first victory in the championship contests. The score of the game on another page speaks for the kind of work that the men did at Providence more forcibly than anything we can say. It is gratifying to the college to have the nine "find the ball" thus early in the season, and it is everybody's hope that what has been so truly found will not be lost...

...seldom, if ever opened; this makes the room excessively close. Second, these windows are not covered by curtains, and the unfortunates who take History 13 and Political Economy 4 are exposed to the glare of a noon-day sun on the back of their heads, till the page before them becomes a blur, and then they either faint, - or stay away. ...well turfed diamond, and behind it a comfortable, covered grand-stand. The quarter-mile track surrounding the field has been put into excellent condition, and the candidates for the Mott Haven team exercise on it daily under the direction of their trainer, Pennell. They have three first-class men, Page in the high jump, Faines in the mile run, and Kohler in the bicycle race. Several other candidates are promising well, and some of the most sanguine spirits think that Pennsylvania's chances for the inter-collegiate cup this year are fair to say the least...

...amusing circumstance in this connection is the fact that the following clipping is taken from the same issue and the same page of the Spirit on which their criticism of us occurs. "Yale's chances for winning the cup at the Mott Haven games this spring have been greatly lessened by the withdrawal of H. S. Brooks and Hamilton from active athletics." The italics are ours...
