...shorter versions: the 1855 rendering by the Urdu poet Ghalib Lakhnavi, and an 1871 text by the Urdu scholar Abdullah Bilgrami, who took Lakhnavi's edition and added various flourishes and refrains to restore its original bardic character. Even so, Farooqi's translation is almost a thousand pages in total. It was a Herculean labor. "When I looked at the first page," Farooqi confesses, "I thought 'What the hell is this?'" Translating the heavily Persian form of classical Urdu required seven years, which Farooqi spent shuttling between archives in South Asia and libraries the West, poring over manuscripts and microfilm...
...Those realities will continue to hamper any push for fresh sanctions. The current plan calls for additional pressure on several fronts. Last month, the U.S. unveiled new financial sanctions against Iran that take a page from the playbook Washington used - successfully, in its view - to force North Korea to shut down its nuclear-weapons program. Specifically, the Treasury Department barred U.S. companies from dealings with three Iranian banks, as well as several companies the U.S. claims are in the WMD-proliferation business. ...overall ranking, the U.S. finishes first (same as last year) out of 131 countries, thanks in part to top scores in venture-capital availability (plentiful), domestic-market size (huge) and cost of firing workers (low). Further down are some more surprising comparisons (see list at left), such as South Korea at No. 11, up from 23rd place last year...

The Crimson may be cavalier about the impact of theft on our colleagues in the music community. After having watched thousands of regular, working class employees laid off and no longer in the music profession, we are not.Whatever one might see as the future for record companies, the importance of their creative and business role to date cannot be denied. Record companies have invested enormous sums of money to find and develop talent, and to record and market music. They...
...this does us no good in the media. It is why you do not read about Australia in U.S. newspapers. Practically nothing in Australia is considered worth reporting. In all the 30 years I have lived in New York City, I doubt that I have seen as many front-page stories about my country in the New York Times as you'd get about Israel in a month. Why would you want to know about us? We don't rock your boat or export much you're interested in, except for our admirable wines, a steady supply of sports figures...
