...bonds should keep them and not relinquish them to another person. If they are so relinquished, the bonds passed become instantly another's contribution, instead of that of the original purchaser. Public sentiment is now demanding absolute support of the war, and nothing but actual possession of the bonds, paid in full by the original purchaser, is complete satisfactory evidence of his contribution, made in that form, to American victory. Since the U53 and the Deutschland paid us their respects early in the war, we have taken it for granted that the submarines would restrict their activities to the Irish Sea, the Mediterranean, and the waters around the coasts of England and France. At least, we soon believed this to be the German policy when, after the Naval Reserve had taken to sea in their motley array of ships, no enemy was found willing to do battle. Our vigil little by little relaxed, the crews ceased to open fire on every inoffensive porpoise, and the Navy Department began to build...

Persons temporarily unemployed by reason of differences with employers, as the law phrases it, are not included in its provisions. The law-makers, however, have not exempted the so-called "idle rich." The receipt of income from property or other source is not considered the equivalent of "gainful employment." Students are the only other class of citizens excluded from the law's operation...

...give to it its full value, have only had the effect to win for it the epithet of "the overgrown monster." For all that, its history, its size and some of its architectural features no doubt entitle it to the respect which the British and French aviators have hitherto paid to it. But if considerations of military advantage should render it desirable to follow up the recent small attack on Cologne with larger and more destructive raids, and in one of these the cathedral at Cologne should be wrecked, its destruction would make but a poor exchange for the Cathedral...
