...Rudolph's plan will probably move more automobiles through the Square more quickly than at present but at the expense of one of Cambridge's most endearing traditions: the freedom to walk where one likes. Policemen will be able to ticket pedestrians who venture outside crosswalks, which despite luminous paint are now virtually invisible. Hurried motorists will be able to run down errant pedestrians and worry less about paying damages...
Cambridge has gone to a good deal of trouble to prepare for the anti-jaywalking law--the first of its kind in the Boston area. Last August the city installed "Walk" "Don't Walk" signs in Harvard Square, and, more recently, it bought $10,000 worth of light-reflecting paint to paint crosswalks...
Though Mondrian has been dead for two decades, the grip of de Stijl's geometry has never lessened, as is demonstrated in the 80-odd paintings on show at Manhattan's Marlborough-Gerson Gallery. Among the younger Dutch painters, Joost Baljeu, 39, makes mechanical totems of an order beyond emotion. He lays down the brush for what he calls "the new art tools of man"-machines -and makes his metal reliefs look un touched...
Getting ready for the try, Olivier boomed and bellowed at the rehearsal hall's rafters until he had amplified his "rib reserve." He practiced the curiously accented, oddly stressed speech that evoked the way some Jamaicans and Africans gush English, managing thereby to convey the way the Moor spoke Italian...
Great Name. The $16 million purchase of Canada Dry stock followed Simon's typical pattern for takeover of a company (TIME, Aug. 23). He bought the stock through his Hunt Foods, which, in addition to controlling McCall Corp., owns Wesson Oil, Ohio Match, Fuller Paint and a 7% share of Wheeling Steel. Canada Dry is just the kind of company that Simon thinks can benefit from his brand of management, which is devoted to a constant search for change and improvement. "Canada Dry has a great name and a strong brand position," he says, "but earnings are modest...
