...FORCE. McClellan Air Force Base, 10 miles northeast of Sacramento, California, is on the EPA's Superfund worst-case list, and virtually every other air base has its share of problems. Maintenance crews at McClellan used powerful solvents to strip paint from F-15 aircraft and remove grease from F- 111 engine parts. A major electroplating operation dumped chrome, lead and other metals into the ground. Altogether, the Air Force has discovered 177 toxic sites on McClellan's 3,500 acres. Local water wells have been shut down because of contamination. At one site, the TCE level...
...Paint-stripping and engine-maintenance operations present a more formidable challenge. At the Naval Air Engineering Center in Lakehurst, New Jersey, a plume of water contaminated by TCE solvent is leaking into the aquifer that supplies water to the southern part of the state. Investigations at the Norfolk Naval Base complex in Virginia are only partly completed, but it already appears that the Navy's biggest single installation may turn out to be its biggest contamination problem...

Jacques-Louis David looked old-fashioned by then, whereas Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko, Liubov Popova and all their...
...past, leap into the future. "Only he is alive," Malevich pronounced, "who rejects his convictions of yesterday." Lissitzky's "prouns" -- a term he coined from the Russian words meaning project of the affirmation of the new -- resemble plans or aerial views of Utopian structures, an abstract New Jerusalem in paint. They are a middle ground between Malevich's absolutism and the more pragmatic agitprop efforts of artists...
...rearrangement. I'm sure this is the same for many students here. No longer are our fears transfused, as in childhood, into wonderful creatures and cosmic events. The annual festival of awakened demons, Halloween, has turned into a kinky excuse for parties, a chance to don leather garments and paint your face white. No one can seriously be chilled by a cemetery's annual effluence, when the roads outside present many more daily terrors...
