Having tired of one short jail sentence after another, Painter Grammens recently announced an armistice of sorts: no more daubing on official buildings, but plenty of attention to such private undertakings as shops, hotels, garage owners, doctors. Meanwhile, the Belgium Royal Commission on Names and Dialects made haste to appease M. Grammens and all Flemish nationalists. From Richmond last week came the report of Mr. Weddell's investigations. Sir Godfrey Kneller, court painter to England's King Charles II and signer of the Richmond portrait, did two pictures of Piotr Ivanovich Potemkin, Russian envoy to the Court of St. James's in 1681. Comparing Richmond's John Smith with both, Mr. Weddell found the subject identical. Vaguely London dealers murmured that Sir Godfrey's favorite engraver was named John Smith: maybe that was how Piotr Ivanovich Potemkin passed for Virginia's Smith...

Died. Katharine Augusta Carl, eightyish, U. S. portrait painter; scalded by hot water in her bathtub; in Manhattan. In 1903, after arrangements requiring infinite tact and ceremony, Miss Carl started to paint the portrait of China's Dowager Empress. When she had finished three, Her Majesty was so pleased with the whole procedure that she wanted Miss Carl to continue painting her picture indefinitely...
