...most striking development in Ablow's recent work is in its unorthodox, ethereal color. While his previous works were mostly painted in shades of chalky beige and rose with a careful accumulation of paint layers, (a derivative of the direct color technique he learned from Oskar Kokoschka), these paintings glow with blues worthy of Picasso’s Blue Period and warm coppers worthy of Georgia O’Keefe’s canyons. In works like “The Mantle” and “Tuscan Shadows” Ablow’s objects are suffused with...
...seaside towns, the jungle up-country and rice-growing villages. In reaction, the military has revived its time-honored strategy of slash and burn. On the wall of a torched house in Rantau Pangang, a riverine settlement on the main north-south highway, is a date daubed in paint: 25/3/2001. That was the day police and army units arrived in trucks to shoot six villagers, apparently randomly, and burn down most of the village. "There was no reason for any of this," mutters Yusman, a grizzled shopkeeper, who was still sifting through rubble last week to retrieve former possessions. "They...
...Were the President's arguments and powers of persuasion as strong as he and Rove pretend, his tax bill would be law. But after more than 20 road trips to pressure Senators to support it, Bush was unable to turn a single vote his way. Again, Rove can paint with a broad brush. When Bush came to Washington, no one thought Congress would support such a large tax cut. If he gets 80 percent of what he wanted, that's enough to call...
Haney creates depth in her paintings through her extensive layering of household objects. Pieces of fabric, paper and other sketches are layered on top of each other to create the sense that there is always another image trying to emerge from beneath the paint. The overall effect of this layer creates a dream-like sense of space, unconstrained by classical perspective and offering a multiplicity of views. This theme is emphasized by Haney’s extensive use of actual household objects in her collage such as wallpaper and newspaper...
Overall Apesos’ paintings are thematically interesting but not artistically involving. Like the overall exhibit, Apesos’ artistic experimentation seems fragmented, and spread about in pieces. Apesos only sparsely textures his paint, making the majority of the work flat and commercial in appearance. The few times that Apesos experiments with a textured application of paint, it enhances the work, and makes the viewer wish he had used these techniques more often. Additionally, Apesos’ style changes very little throughout the exhibit. For the most part, he uses oil paints to create clearly defined images, reminiscent...
