...Pakistan Chief Justice Reinstated In a move widely seen as a victory for Pakistan's judiciary and for opposition leader Nawaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari agreed to reinstate the country's Chief Justice, relenting in the face of mass protests. Zardari had previously vowed to let Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, first removed by former President Pervez Musharraf nearly two years ago, resume his job; Zardari reportedly stalled over fears the judge would revive corruption charges against...

...across the border ... causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians." Mexico has seen more than 7,000 drug-related killings since early 2008, and the violence now threatening to spill north hasn't escaped attention. Late last year, somewhat hyperbolically, a Pentagon study lumped Mexico in with Pakistan as states that might face a "rapid and sudden collapse...

...Pakistan A Deadly Show of Strength Baitullah Mehsud, commander of Taliban groups in Pakistan, took credit for a March 30 raid on a police academy in Lahore that sparked an eight-hour standoff and left at least 12 people dead. In telephone interviews with Pakistani news agencies, Mehsud also promised to "amaze everyone in the world" with an attack on Washington as revenge for U.S. missile strikes on militant bases along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The FBI painted the threat as purely aspirational, pointing out that Mehsud had made similar comments before. Still, the attack comes less than a month...

...unifying gloss that cricket gives to a nation like Pakistan is far too thin. Pakistan's doom is that religion continues to be the primary basis of identity for this artificially created state, to the detriment of everything else. While the state champions a rigid sense of identity, the land reforms and economic, social and legal reforms that are critical to nurturing democracy and development have been totally ignored by feudal lords masquerading as politicians and hell-bent on retaining power. East Pakistan split away to become Bangladesh; given half a chance, Baluchistan or some other restive regions would...
