Added to the failure of the Naval Base raid was the frustration of a jailbreak plot at Sing Sing, in which Pal Ryan was embroiled. Warden Lewis Edward Lawes of Sing Sing keeps the most desperate of his charges in the thick-walled, century-old cellblock (TIME, Nov. 18). From an outside "wire" (tipoff) he learned that Ryan and three others in old Sing Sing were concocting a plot. Slyly he watched them. Suddenly the four were seized, their cells searched. In one were found draftsman's designs...
...other shows, this is not their equal. The plot by no means holds up its end of the entertainment, and the individual characters, Jolson, and Marion Nixon, the pretty and sometimes rather appealing young wife, are forced to do more than their share. Davey Lee, as "Little Pal," is a deciding factor in the story, and gives a creditable performance while being so. It is the inspiration which results in the feature song of the program, also called "Little Pal." These words of emotional father love are well sung by Jolson, and are the best part of the picture...
...spots. In this film about a whimsical mechanic's love life, the background is sketchily and conventionally treated. William Haines capitalizes his famed insouciance to the point of insufferability. Proving at the denouement that he is a good chap after all, he sacrifices the race to his pal, Ernest Torrence, best ac tor in the cast. Best shot: a car turning over on the track...
