...football player and O.J. Simpson traveling pal AL COWLINGS is finally on record about the case-a 900 phone-line recording, that is. For $2.99 a minute, callers can hear Cowlings reminisce about his friendship with O.J., or weigh in with their opinions about Simpson's guilt or innocence. Cowlings will keep all profits from the venture. That may explain why, as the meter clicks away, he speaks...
...Adelboden, Tomba initially had trouble finding his rhythm and finished the first of his two runs 0.34 sec. behind Norway's Harald Strand Nilsen. Early in the second run, he lagged slightly behind his pal Jure Kosir of Slovenia. Then, under the eyes of 5.5 million Italian TV watchers, La Bomba proved as good as his name. Their customers and girlfriends are just as lost, goofy and irrelevant. The budget for Kevin Smith's movie was $27,575, but he's the Chekhov of slacker life -- and maybe of America's secret life...
...film's central character is so uninvolving. Jennifer Jason Leigh's draggy performance as Parker is all studied accent (something vaguely mid- Atlantic but never before heard on Earth) and equally studied self-pity. Her sadness is attributed mainly to her failure to sexually consummate a relationship with her pal Robert Benchley (Campbell Scott). But this is a dithery and inconsequential tragedy, and it cannot sustain our sympathy, or our interest in this inept film...
