...Hart. There we learn that Hart was short, agitated, unreliable, full of mischief and misery - and that if only Betty Garrett had accepted his offer of matrimony, he might have lived his full span. It happens that Hart did propose to Vivienne Segal, who starred in R&Hart's "Pal Joey"; and she did refuse, telling friends, "I mean, I never even kissed Larry." The film omits Hart's real-life alcoholism and homosexuality - but then, most 40s musical bio-pics (see, or rather avoid, plague-like, the Porter "Night and Day") had only a coincidental connection with their tunesmiths...

...course carefully or risk going hat in hand to Washington for a taxpayer-backed bailout. He's already unpopular for leading the charge on Congress to grant a $15 billion aid package for the industry the first week after the attacks. "I ain't running for election here, pal," he says. "If we had waited another week to publicly acknowledge where we were, we'd still be arguing about it, and a bunch of us would be bankrupt...

...scam. Pretending to be a single dad (which, naturally, entails having a pretend child), he joins S.P.A.T. (Single Parents, Alone Together) and gets less and more than he bargained for. There's only one attractive woman to hit on, but she introduces him, via a picnic, to her best pal's son Marcus (a marvelously uncute Nicholas Hoult). He's bullied at school, and his mom (Toni Collette) is a mess, clinging to an outmoded hippie lifestyle and suicidally inclined. The kid sees in detached and manipulative Will a surrogate father whose isolation matches his own. Maybe together they...
