...With My Super Sweet 16 and Tiara Girls, The Hills completes a kind of MTV trilogy of princesshood. Yet it's hard not to like Conrad, if only because compared with her idle, spoiled friends, she's practically Horatio Alger. ("I have a full-time job!" says one guy pal. "I go out every night!") Deadpan and gorgeously shot, The Hills is an addictively watchable visit to the cool kids' table...

...with his characters, Piven has, in addition to the barrage of energy, a surprising calm sweetness. Sure, he does yoga like every other actor, but he's really, really good at it. And to help a struggling documentarian pal, he got the Travel Channel to bankroll a two-part series they made together in India, Jeremy Piven's Journey of a Lifetime. Although the title made him sound like a dork, he came off as sensitive, curious and awed by the culture. Diddy (Diddy)]) Combs and might--just might--have been interested in Stern's fledgling Skull & Bones brand. Stern also claims that Burkle, a jet-setter (he owns a Boeing 757, which pal Bill Clinton dubbed Ron Air), has no media "structure" to run interference. Stern would fill that role--and part of his job would be to keep Burkle's name out of the column he wrote for. A simple business proposition: You scratch my back, I won't scratch your eyes...

...that the movie doesn't contain seeds of its own parody. Peter Barsocchini's script is so aware of its cliches, they almost become endearing. It sets up a dialectic of extremes. Troy's pal Chad (Corbin Bleu) proudly voices the philistine argument: "The music in these shows isn't rock or rap or anything essential..." and "They've got you thinking about show tunes when we've got a basketball game next week." (Why, that's un-American.) The Broadway side is taken by the mandatory snooty blond, Sharpay (Ashleey Tisdale), who calls the Garofalesque composer of the show...
