The plot by no means holds up its end of the entertainment, and the individual characters, Jolson, and Marion Nixon, the pretty and sometimes rather appealing young wife, are forced to do more than their share. Davey Lee, as "Little Pal," is a deciding factor in the story, and gives a creditable performance while being so. It is the inspiration which results in the feature song of the program, also called "Little Pal." These words of emotional father love are well sung by Jolson, and are the best part of the picture...

William Haines capitalizes his famed insouciance to the point of insufferability. Actually, as Al Draper, George Cohan is not interested in getting intimate with Mazie. He has been informed in the first act that his ward, the daughter of a defunct pal, has been mysteriously murdered. Her debauched fiance has been acquitted in a trial. Al Draper, anxious to bring the murderer to bay, fastens his suspicions upon two girls, one the previous mistress of the acquitted fiance, the other her friend whom he cajoles into sharing an apartment with him in the hope of finding her to be a criminal. The mistress of the fiance of his murdered ward...
...wife. As soon as he is free a truck hurts Davy Lee and the wandering story that is a framework for his sob is washed out again with a flood of tears. Jolson sings well, although without burnt cork, which he really needs, such ditties as "Little Pal" and an old one, "Back in Your Own Back Yard." The rest of the numbers will need a lot of plugging to make you remember them. Best shot: Marion Nixon telling Jolson what the manager proposed to her. Silliest shot: a doctor refusing to operate on Little Pal unless Miss Nixon raises...
