Noise is the least of it. Aircraft exhaust killed a wheat field next to the runway, Pickard says, and several years ago, Pickard's cattle came down with a mysterious affliction--heifers losing weight, their eyes pale and blank. His veterinarian finally traced it to the water supply, Lytle's Creek, which had been contaminated with ethylene glycol from Airborne's de-icing operation. Local environmentalists have met with Airborne's lawyers, and the company is studying the problem. But with winter here, the de-icer is flowing again...

...raunchy, sentimental narration about a couple of old Texas Rangers on a cattle drive, this Pulitzer prizewinner was McMurtry at the absolute top of his form. The author, as much in love with Lonesome Dove as his readers were, contrived a sequel, Streets of Laredo (1993). ...list of conditions met to get the permit to break ground eventually ran to 107 items. Some were major design considerations. The neighbors didn't want Meier's signature white surfaces glaring at them in the Pacific sun, and the metal cladding panels were accordingly colored a pale tan. They insisted on, and got, strict limits to the height of the buildings. And they hated the idea of culture-curious hoi polloi, 1.3 million of them expected each year, looking down into their backyards. One woman feared that visitors to the Getty would look across the valley from a spur...
