...Lisa. Leonardo painted her some 29 years earlier, when he had only recently completed his apprenticeship in the Florentine studio of Andrea del Verrocchio. The technique, while accomplished, is stiffer than that of his later works. Yet Ginevra, a curly-haired blonde with narrow, almost Mongolian eyes, a stern, pale mouth and alabaster skin, is clearly one of Leonardo's ladies. ...pale colors and excited forms of the Mannerists are well represented in this show by the paintings of Bloemaert, Cornelis Van Haarlem, and Honthorst and Terbrugghen--with rich colors and deep chiaroscuro effects (contrasts of light and dark) are also fairly well sampled, as are the Italianate canvasses, including paintings by Poelenburgh and Nicolaes Berchem. The influence of these three styles is very marked in seventeenth century Dutch paintings, particularly in the Rembrandts, but the range of Rembrandt paintings in this exhibition is not adequate to demonstrate this clearly...

...bought the wild paintings of Georgio and miscellaneous cohorts--she was their patron goddess. Her top-floor studio which led onto the terrace and pool, was hung with eleven portraits done by thankful young admiring artists she had helped. Not flattering ones only.
