Henry Wiggen is a winner-a blond-and-blue-eyed All-America baseball hero, golden, graceful and uncomplicated. Julian Weston is a maggot-pale homosexual prostitute, strung out like a taut wire between self-inflicted denigration and a yearning for clean, well-lighted love. What these totally disparate characters-the one in John Hancock's film Bang the Drum Slowly, the other in English Playwright John Hopkins' Broadway drama Find Your Way Home -have in common is the very uncommon talent of Actor Michael Moriarty, who plays them both. ...Premier Aleksei Kosygin visited the Caribbean island in 1971-and the biggest crowd Brezhnev had ever received on his frequent travels abroad. Plainly enjoying the effusive Latin welcome, he traded warm abrazos with Castro, and waved continuously on the 25-mile motorcade into Havana from the back of a pale gray open Zil convertible that had been shipped from Moscow, along with a fleet of black Chaika limousines...

The source of strain was his continuing Watergate woes, particularly his staffs inability to explain how a mysterious hum obliterated 18 minutes of his conversation with former Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman on June 20, 1972, three days after the Watergate breakin. Even close White House aides conceded that the gap on the tape had seriously damaged his efforts to restore public confidence. Said one assistant...

...grew up in Holland and migrated to the U.S. in 1952, is one of the finest creators of children's books alive. He researches historic subjects (The Erie Canal, London Bridge Is Falling Down) for months, then meticulously re-creates an era in delicate pen-and-ink with pale watercolor washes. This time, with his customary blend of beauty and utility (opposite page), Spier presents the 25-hour bombardment of Fort McHenry...
