...heads of neighboring Central Asian states in his capital of Astana earlier this month, there was a certain whiff of power being flexed, albeit arriviste power. The occasion was marked by the inauguration of the Palace of Peace and Accord - a 62-m-high pyramid of steel and pale gray granite, designed [an error occurred while processing this directive] by Norman Foster, with stained-glass panels by the artist Brian Clarke. Its art and sculpture were chosen to represent the world's major religions, to underscore the religious tolerance and respect that has been firmly established in a multiethnic country...

...John Bolton, called the performance "a comic-strip approach to international affairs." A product of Venezuela's llanos, or rural plains, Chávez patterns his style after the straight-talking llaneros (cowboys) he grew up with. (One of his favorite American films is Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider.) Chávez is fond of calling Bush "Mister Danger," a reference to a quintessential Ugly American in Venezuela's best-known novel, Dońa Bárbara, a torrid story set not far from where Chávez was raised. He then started telling the story of Galicia--the Spanish region from which his father came...

...phone is not a RAZR clone. It's just as slim and, like the hot Samsung a900 Blade for Sprint, it owes much of its appeal to Motorola's revolutionary handset. But a clone is an imitation, often a pale one. My instinct is that what Motorola started with the RAZR, other companies mean to finish. The CU500 - the first phone to tap into Cingular's new "High-Speed Downlink Packet Access" (HSDPA) network - is next in a stream of upcoming slim and powerful cell phones...
