...this point it is clear how much, subliminally or not, Giacometti has meant to Rothenberg. This probing for form through a web, a mist of approximate lines, so that the never-quite-final shape becomes a palimpsest of recorded attempts to fix it, echoes Giacometti's own anxiety before his subjects. How can the artist be sure, and make you sure, what is there? For Rothenberg the problem becomes worse, because she chooses subjects in movement, the opposite of Giacometti's hieratic stillness. It does not always come off, but when it does you are made sharply aware...

Umberto Eco's novel was a deliciously complex academician's joke: a multiple- murder mystery set in the Middle Ages and starring a Sherlockian monk with the mind-set of a modern semiotician. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud's pale "palimpsest" of the novel opts instead for rolling around in the muck, blood and superstitions of primitive societies -- a sort of Quest for Friar. ...producers have minimized the comparisons to the novel by calling the screenplay a "palimpsest," a Greek word for a manuscript that has been partially erased and written upon several times. While the book was a lengthy work rife with literary references, every moment full of life's rich pageant, the film tends to focus on the murder mystery, the Spanish Inquisition and the relationship between the brilliant investigating monk, William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and his young apprentice, Adso of Melk (Christian Slater...

...those printer's errors." They were, in part, his own fault. An obsessive reviser, Joyce scrawled some 100,000 additional words in the margins of galleys as they were sent to him for proofreading. These changes had to be incorporated into what was al ready becoming a palimpsest of confusion: diverse typists' errant renderings of various stages of Joyce's manuscript, compounded by a team of French-speaking printers who were being hectored by the author to get the finished product into his hands on the occasion of his 40th birthday...

...intrigues and atmospheres, Yellowfish is no ordinary thriller with grand scenery and exotic characters. Novelist Keeble, 35, a teacher and rancher from Medical Lake, Wash., is out to evoke an entire region. His eastern Washington, "a country of high desert, sage brush, pine, rivers and basalt extrusion," is a palimpsest of Indian legend, the ragged footprints of pioneers and the restless ghosts of Joaquin Miller, Frank Norris and Jack London...
