...cause bewilderment, or with disfiguring interpretations, which cause exasperation. The main problem with the Conservatory production was its reliance on an unimaginatively employed diorama yielding only the sun and moon on occasion, and totally failing to conjure the forest or grotto scenes. The lighting too often cast a mustard pall on the actors, with the exceptions of Act IV scene i and Act V throughout. The direction failed to take to heart Debussy's insistence that an improper gesture would mar a scene; the actors' gestures were perilously close to woodenness, which is at odds with the demands...
...realized that Flower Power was dead. The Diggers, those altruistic dispensers of free food and medicine, had largely disbanded, LSD had given way to methedrine, and the crash pads echoed to the frenetic screams of "speed freaks"; the grisly murder of "Groovy" Hutchinson and Linda Fitzpatrick cast a pall over hippiedom. Only a small band of the movement's founders and gurus, including Hoffman, chose to form a political link with the ideological New Left. The result was the Youth International Party (YIP), which was founded at least partly in hopes of converting the angrily activist Students...
There were earlier adversities. Bobby Kennedy's death cast a pall over everything. It certainly did over me. I couldn't campaign for weeks. Then I got started and had to stop because I was ill. I was out of action for twelve days [with the flu, in July]. Then along came the convention-the two conventions, one inside the Amphitheater, one outside. What could have been worse for millions of people to be watching while trying to make up their minds whom to vote for? We went out of there destroyed. It's not a wonder...

In reply to Chesterfield's joshing boast that its 101s are "a silly millimeter longer," Winston Super Kings scoff: "It's not how long you make it." Right, says Pall Mall 100s. What counts is whether you're "longer at both ends." Going everybody one less, Player's cigarettes is currently marketing a new brand in Canada that is "five millimeters shorter" than regular size, which means that "you smoke a little less, you pay a little less." If that...
Rosemary's Baby is even more a media-mogul's product: Yamaha cycles, Pall Mall cigarettes, and assorted brand names are shown on TV sets, dropped on tables, and exhibited shamelessly throughout. The exteriors are bleached-out process shots taken on different days with no attempt made to reconcile light changes. When a little action is necessary, Polanski drags out the hand-held camera for some shaky realism (catch Hitchcock filming violence with a hand-held camera!); and repeatedly, Polanski substitutes tight close-ups for style. If nothing else, Rosemary's Baby is ugly--aesthetically derelict, the groping...
