...idea is that the SoftBook--or something like it--will be the only book, magazine or photo album you'll ever need. This model can also do a lot of the Palm Pilot's work--like keeping a calendar and address book. It's not quite as portable as the Palm, however; it's something for your book bag rather than your shirt pocket. SoftBook Press, which makes the software for the device, thinks the addition of color will help it break into the school market. You could download a whole e-curriculum for the price of a few textbooks...

...this silly habit. I realize that many Americans have managed to convince themselves that they are so important that no one should be deprived of their attention for any amount of time, no matter how minuscule. We carry not only cell phones these days but beepers and Palm Pilots and probably some other gadgets I haven't even heard of yet. And certainly in emergencies, or if you're a doctor, you need those things...

...might have thought the new, as yet unnamed Sony PDA was the sixth Backstreet Boy for all the attention lavished on it. Built to run Palm software, the new Sony (exhibited under glass--no touching, please) is thinner and lighter than other Palm devices and, with its sleek, brushed-metal finish, quite a bit sexier. It's also rumored to include brand- new entertainment and digital imaging features, but Sony was cagy about the details. Look for it on catwalks early this fall...
