...balmy night in September 1988 San Diego's Mayor Maureen O'Connor spent the night in Balboa Park, not to take the air beneath the palm fronds but to sample the life of homeless people. In jeans and baseball cap, she watched a series of drug deals go down. She spent a second night among more vagrants at a skid row mission. Throughout most of her 48 hours on the streets, she went unrecognized -- until Sister Raymonda, a nun who has known the mayor for years, spotted her resting on a bench reading the paper and whispered, "If you want...

...best described as enthusiastic. The jarringly bad costumes and set certainly do not impress. The outfits look like dress-up clothes found in the back of a closet. The police officers inexplicably look like Hell's Angel rejects and the hookers look like Barbie dolls. Minimalist crepe-paper palm trees and a funky beaded curtain litter the stage. A God-only-knows-why velvet Elvis painting completes the perfect tackiness of the scene in the Leverett Old Library. But the acting is good enough to compensate for all that...

According to Oscar Wilde, who had plenty of reason to think so, all history is gossip. By that definition, Liz Smith is one of America's premier historians. From Palm Beach, Fla., to Santa Barbara, Calif., via her syndicated column and New York City television show, she catalogs the follies and the triumphs of the famous, able in the wink of a cliche to make careers and unwrap reputations. Some folks can't wait to lap up her latest morsels; others think she ought to have her typewriter confiscated. "She has the power to get people to pay attention," says...

...conference host, Washington Mayor Marion Barry, who shortly before was captured on a grainy FBI videotape apparently sipping cognac and smoking crack cocaine from a pipe. Three days after being charged with possession of cocaine, Barry retreated to the Hanley-Hazelden Center for drug and alcohol abuse in West Palm Beach, Fla., declaring that he sought healing in "body, mind and soul." Behind him, the still stunned capital wrestled with questions about the propriety of his arrest and the political future of a battered city...

When they close up shop at night, many Southern California landscapers have to lock up their most valuable merchandise: palm trees. The plants, essential for any chic Southwestern edifice, are in such demand that nurseries are unable to keep them in stock. A prize specimen of Phoenix reclinata, which grows only a foot a year, now retails for $25,000. The new Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas spent a seven-figure sum to install 200 palms averaging 40 ft. each...
