A ninth-grade dropout, Summerfield built up one of the country's largest Chevrolet dealerships during the Depression. His 1940 Michigan campaign work for Wendell Willkie started his political career; by the 1952 Republican Convention, he was able to deliver a key bloc of delegates to Eisenhower.
