...could have sold tickets: Bernie Madoff approaching Donald Trump in Palm Beach, asking whether Trump would like to invest some money with him. The Donald, as he recalls in his new book, Think Like a Champion, said no. He also calls Madoff "a scoundrel without par." And refers to himself as "a genius." For those who see Trump's blazing self-confidence as a perfect antidote for these depressing, recession-wracked times, the Donald also continues to buoy spirits with his hit NBC series, The Apprentice. ...capture of one of Colombia's most wanted drug lords - who had, according to the police, been hiding in the country's northwestern jungle "like a dog" under a shelter of palm fronds - has led to major rejoicing in the country's war on drugs. Daniel Rendon Herrera, alias "Don Mario," allegedly headed a vast narcotrafficking operation, run largely out of the country's northwest, that caused a surge in drug violence in the nearby city of Medellin. Work up an appetite for lunch by putting the previous day's surfing lesson into...
Clipping Big Bird's Wings. The last British Airways Concorde aircraft will reportedly be sold to Dubai (along with the Queen Elizabeth 2) as a tourist attraction on Palm Jumeirah. The supersonic BA fleet was grounded six years ago and all the other aircraft were donated to museums, except this last one, which had been stripped for spare parts. That's not the last indignity it will suffer - to get the plane to Dubai via ship, its wings will have to be cut off before loading. Once at its final destination, it will be tarted up and opened for touring...
...claims and counterclaims will no doubt continue to ricochet between Baghdad, Tehran, Washington and of course, Camp Ashraf. As two journalists head out of the camp in the early evening, past the segregated, one-story barracks-style dormitories and canteens, along paved streets lined by eucalyptus and palm trees and dotted with orange and yellow daisies, the faint echo of chanting protesters gradually gets louder. The people with the placards are still standing near the entrance, still staring out beyond the camp, still chanting. And there's still nobody there to listen...
