...others who must sleep in shifts. His mother's source of income destroyed, he can no longer afford university. "My dreams have died," Soares says. "We have no jobs, no education, no homes." The former law student admits to knowing people in the camps who get drunk on palm spirits and throw stones at peacekeepers and passersby. "I don't do it myself," he says. "But life is so frustrating, it's hard to calm down...
...OBEROI VRINDA: Cruising the backwaters of Kerala has become extremely competitive. Every resort with a website, it seems, has jury-rigged an "antique" fishing boat, or kettuvellam, to navigate the state's palm-fringed canals. The Oberoi Vrinda, however, does it better than most. With just eight cabins and wonderful cuisine (you won't get enough of the spicy prawn curry), this is a marvelous way to catch glimpses of Indian life-from women washing clothes on the banks to fishermen selling their catch from boats. DIED. David Berger, 94, self-described "people's lawyer" pivotal in jump-starting class-action lawsuits; in Palm Beach, Fla. The operators won that right, and $37 million in damages, in a 1984 settlement...

It is the week after Thanksgiving, and Branson is playing host to a "galactic get-together" on Necker Island. Beer and wine are being consumed like so much rocket fuel. Sushi floats in on a boat--to the middle of the pool. (Swimsuits required!) There's a casino party one night, a tennis tourney in the pouring rain and golf off the top deck...
...Watanabe’s Best Actor snub is a terrible omission, especially in a year when Hollywood is pretending to care about international films. The Academy ignored many critics’ international favorites as well. Where is French writer-directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s Palm d’Or winner “L’Enfant” nomination? Where is Romanian director Cristi Puiu’s “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” honor? Where is the recognition for Korean director Hou Hsiao-hsien?...
