Tennis courts, a spa, private balconies (taking in palm-fringed mountain views), bathtubs built for two and butler service make for a memorable guest experience, as does Saen Kham Terrace - the stunning art gallery cum restaurant next door. Dishes like shiitake mushrooms in salty lime sauce, and Burmese pork curry, hold their own against the gallery's modern art and ancient artifacts, attracting both fashionable Thais and awed but underdressed tourists. Discover this stylish sanctuary, nestled beneath the sacred peak of Doi Suthep, before more of the latter do. Visit www.baansaendoi.com for details...

...fortifications marking battle lines around Hamed's neighborhood are crude. Chunks of chopped-up palm trees rest next to rusting refrigerators, junked generators and bags of rocks. In another life not too long ago, Hamed was a businessman who spent days tending to his various shops. Now Hamed's afternoons go to checking on the Sunni families crowded into the houses around his. ...maneuver, and when Jay-Z combines it with real attempts at acknowledging his place in rap and in life on 30 Something ("I don't got one gun on me/ Gotta sum on me to hire a gun army/ Getcha spun like laundry/ And I'll be somewhere under palm trees/ Calmly listenin' to R&B"), Kingdom Come seems destined to become rap's first genuinely adult album. But those moments are just flashes between Jay telling rap's new kids to get off his lawn and reminding the rest of us that he's still a thug at heart...
