While racketeers have long been siphoning surplus income into legitimate business, such investments are as tricky to pin down as the boojum. Last week the Chicago Crime Commission published some results of its investigation in a directory that might be called Hood's Who. The pamphlet not only lists the names and addresses of 13 Mafia chieftains and 214 lieutenants, but also identifies 42 firms said to be either owned by the mob or affiliated with...

...Nobel Peace Prize; of pneumonia; in Surrey, England. During half a century of writing punctuated by two world wars, Angell published more than 40 books decrying as illusory any "victory" in war and urging meaningful peace through collective security, most notably in Europe's Optical Illusion, a slim pamphlet first printed in 1909 and then, as it became the subject of a raging controversy, expanded into a book-length The Grand Illusion, which was eventually translated into 15 languages...

By clandestine radio, furtive pamphlet and whispered word of mouth, they warned the peasants to boycott the polls on pain of death. To make sure that their message was understood, during election week Viet Cong terrorists killed 190 civilians, wounded 426 and kidnaped another...

...Detroit, under banners reading DRY CRUSADERS and CONSERVATIVE-AMERICAN-CHRISTIAN, were some 50 delegates of the Prohibition Party. When a speaker really got warmed up, the delegates, with a rustling of shawls, erupted in lusty choruses of "Amen!" For pep songs, they turned to the New Day Temperance Songs pamphlet. For hardhitting oratory, they had Michigan Fundamentalist Charles Ewing, who deplored life under the Great Society as "a syncopated Watusi," in which "grey-haired mothers and grandmothers have shortened their skirts, exposed their bones, lit up their cigarettes, put on their war paint and started on a gin blitz...
