...Remember all that fiddle about how rock is the great new art form of the era, about how it should be a potent force for political and social comment, if not outright change? Does it now turn out that its most significant current figure is just doing what Tin Pan Alley has always done-wedding simple musical ideas to quite ordinary lyrical notions about love, loss and longing? And, in the great tradition of the music business, avoiding any things that might be regarded as "difficult" or "controversial"? The answer...

...dictator]?" Does sukiyaki need soy sauce? Of course Blackthorne signs on as Toranaga's henchman, while still more rivalries congeal the already thickening plot: Buddhists v. Christians, Spaniards v. Portuguese, Franciscans v. Jesuits, Protestants v. Catholics. Author Clavell is an encyclopedic chronicler of Oriental lore (his bestselling Tai-Pan was set in Hong Kong), and he lubricates his massive research with regular doses of bloodshed. ...will turn 65. Tillinghast will now almost certainly stay on for a while to bridge the transition to a new management. One pressing issue facing the next chief will be whether to take back the Pacific routes and thus become a global carrier again when the route swap with Pan Am expires within the next two years. Trans World seems likely to continue losing money this year, though its monthly deficits may be smaller. In hopes of bringing a fresh approach to bear on the airline's myriad problems, the board will probably go outside the company to find...
