...three weeks, President Thomas Braniff expects to start flying his new routes from Houston, Tex. to Lima, Peru; eventually he will fly to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. The routes cut straight across the juicy domains once monopolized by Pan American Airways and Pan American-Grace (Panagra flies the West Coast, Pan Am the East). Both lines opposed Braniff's entry on the ground that the territory could not support a third U.S. flag line. But President Truman, taking the matter out of CAB's hands, gave Braniff the routes...
...first DC-6s will take to the air again this week. Douglas Aircraft Co. said it had caught the bugs that had caused two plane fires (and the death of 52) last fall and grounded the planes. American Airlines will resume its DC-6 transcontinental flights; United, National, Braniff, Panagra and Sabena will begin to put their planes in service soon afterwards...
...Montreal route, got a charter from the Peruvian Government, and raised $4,000,000 from Americans, Canadians, and Peruvians. P.I.A.'s first route, which it hopes to be operating before March: Lima to Montreal via Panama City, Havana, and New York. This may prove potent competition for Panagra. And if P.I.A. ever makes the obvious extension to Buenos Aires, it will have a New York-to-Buenos Aires route 700 miles shorter than Pan-American Airways...
Worse yet, as time went on Pan Am showed no intention of giving Panagra any advantages. On the other hand Grace was all for pushing Panagra into the highest circles, no matter what it meant to Pan Am's prestige and profits...
Last week, after years of squabbling, the family kissed & made up. In a spirit of sweet accord, Pan Am and Grace jointly announced a 99-year agreement under which Panagra will offer direct daily through service from the U.S. to South America, with Panagra planes and crews flying over Pan Am's routes from Miami and New Orleans to the Canal Zone and going on from there as usual. All that is needed now is the official blessing of CAB, which has already nodded approval...
