...ordinary folks are willing to switch. On ABC Family channel's My Life Is a Sitcom, which premieres next Monday, eight families compete to star in a situation-comedy pilot based on their real lives. The would-be stars have their wacky home lives videotaped and evaluated by a panel of experts, including The Brady Bunch's Maureen McCormick. As executive producer David Perler admits, the show proves that the age-old declaration--My family is just as funny as the ones on TV!--"is really just a sentence." In one episode, we meet Joe Mozian, a stay-at-home...

...blends of coffee--Smooth, Rich, Bold and Robust Decaf--both by the cup in their shops and in bags to take home. In an effort to create a coffee as addictive as its glazed treats, Krispy Kreme barrel-roasts all the blends daily in small batches. One of several finalists for the Regents Scholarship, a four-year ride, she answered honestly when the panel asked her about her major. "I haven't thought much about it. I'm keeping it open," she said. The students who eventually won declared they planned to be missionaries, doctors and lawyers. "I tracked them," she says. "And within a few months, not one of them was doing what...

That failure is stunning. The Arab lands lie at the heart of an arc of crisis from Marrakech to Bangladesh. Autocracies, often dynastic, remain the principal form of government; economies are stagnant; violence is a common way of resolving political debate. Last summer the U.N. Development Programme commissioned a panel of regional experts to write an Arab Human Development Report. It was perhaps the most important volume published in 2002. "The wave of democracy that transformed governance in most of Latin America and East Asia in the 1980s and Eastern Europe and much of Central Asia in the late 1980s...
