Fugitive Timothy Leary, 51-onetime Harvard psychologist, onetime drug-culture guru, onetime convict in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and onetime member of Black Panther Leader Eldridge Cleaver's expatriate flock in Algiers-may have found a resting place at last. Swiss authorities have rejected U.S. demands that Leary be extradited to serve out the rest of his ten-year California sentence for possession of marijuana. The Swiss felt, as one official put it, that ten years was much too stiff a penalty for "finding two marijuana butts in the ashtray of a car that did not even belong...
Ironically his attack on simplistic French attitudes precedes his own incredibly facil analysis of the United States. Without Marx or Jesus hardly bothers with American society. It is relegated to a series of confused vignettes supposedly confirming Revel's thesis. Witness: Leonard Bernstein's Black Panther cocktail party demonstrates a great depth of revolutionary commitment; the opposition to the "no knock" search law shows the growth of civil libertarianism; the movie of The Strawberry Statement indicates artistic fervor; the Hare Krishna Society and the Jesus freaks glow with revolution; and so do all students, all women, all liberals...
...trouble began last September, when it was revealed that Edward Hanrahan, state's attorney in Cook County, had been indicted by a special grand jury. He was charged with trying to prevent an honest investigation of the police raid on a Black Panther apartment in 1969 that resulted in the death of two blacks.* At first, Daley was willing to overlook his loyal protege's indiscretion; Hanrahan was on the 1972 slate of Democratic candidates proclaimed by Daley early in December. But Daley did not realize how badly Hanrahan had been hurt...
More than four years ago, Oakland Police Officer John Frey died on a main thoroughfare of four bullet wounds. Charged with his murder was Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the then fledgling, largely unknown Black Panther Party. In the intervening years, Newton was convicted, spent 33 months in prison, had his conviction overturned on appeal, and had hung juries force two mistrials. With the last mistrial, Alameda County authorities dropped all charges against Newton. The radical chant "Free Huey!" has at last passed into history...
...released (directed by Leonard Home). Geller says Aubrey's changes made the central character, a violent garage mechanic, too sympathetic, played down the picture's redneck setting and eliminated a climactic murder scene. Says he: "It's not my picture any more." > Director Blake Edwards (Pink Panther, Darling Lili) has stopped post-production work on his film A Case of Need, and instructed his lawyers to file a breach of contract suit against Aubrey. The studio chief, says Edwards, reneged on promised script changes to enhance the love interest between Stars James Coburn and Jennifer...
