...Italian town of Loreto after a miraculous flight from Nazareth. That association with air travel has been enough to make the town of 9,500 a profitable center of jet-age piety. Last week at least 50,000 pilgrims crammed in to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a papal proclamation designating the Madonna of Loreto as protector of aviators; they overflowed the 20 hotels and dozen boarding houses that have gone up in Loreto in recent years. Prosperity from tourism has helped Loreto entrepreneurs to finance several small factories producing souvenirs and religious objects on the periphery of the town...

Powerful Monarch. Lunch, even on papal vacation, is devoted to business. While light courses of pasta, meat or fish, salad and fruit are served, Paul keeps up a lively chatter with his table companions, often including Papal Secretary of State Jean Cardinal Villot, who has a permanent apartment at the summer villa. After a 1½-hour siesta, there is more work: reading (and often writing marginalia in) the Vatican daily, L'Osservatore Romano, and planning or writing important documents. ...Puthenpura's recruits finally brought some limited Vatican action. When Novice Mary Kutty was hospitalized in Florence in 1969, her language teacher fought for her return to India. Puthenpura failed to respond, but the convent finally sent her back and she promptly recovered. Last February papal Secretary of State Jean Cardinal Villot ordered all recruiting to stop. In June papal nuncios in Europe were ordered to interview every Indian novice; Rome's investigation is still going...
