...Came In from the Cold was more than a page-turner. In an act of literary spycraft, Le Carre had smuggled a great human drama inside a pulp paperback. He helped invent a new kind of novel, the literary thriller, and devised one to speak to the anxious pace, global scale and deadly stakes of 20th century geopolitics. Spy and the books that followed it, notably those starring the fictional spymaster George Smiley, laid bare the ticking watchwork of power and subterfuge that underlies our daily lives and established Le Carre as one of the principal fictional chroniclers of modern...
...find out how the first generation of HD radio sounds, I took a ride in a Volkswagen Passat equipped with a Kenwood radio and a KTC-HR100, a $500 tuner about the size of a paperback book. ...close-up now. Panasonic has introduced the Lumix DMC-FZ10 4-megapixel camera ($600), a super-zoom still camera that mimics camcorders in its ability to close in on shots. The paperback was published in 1978 simultaneously with the hardcover, says Eisner, with a larger print run. In fact Eisner acknowledges that the term "graphic novel" had been coined prior to his book. But, he says, "I had not known at the time that someone had used that term before." Nor does he take credit for creating the first graphic book. Eisner...
Hornby’s latest work, Songbook, recently published in paperback, zeroes in on two key themes in Hornby’s previous novels: music and the art of being a fan. Music has occupied a central place in all of his work. In both High Fidelity and About a Boy, the narrators, who bear more than a passing resemblance to Hornby himself, use music as a tool to live by, measuring their lives in songs. Dispensing with the fictional complications of a novel, Hornby has now brought himself directly into his writing...
