NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE, 71, French-born model and self-taught artist best known for her colorful papier-mache sculptures of huge, voluptuous women, called nanas, a French term akin to "broad"; after battling emphysema and asthma; in La Jolla, Calif. A member, with Christo, of the Nouveaux Realistes, she first won fame in the early 1960s for her "shooting" pieces, for which she would fire a gun at her sculptures and paintings in galleries.
