...even this god of war had to adapt to the 1990s and its politically correct paradigm. Changing times required a change of pace, and Arnold gamely struggled to reinvent his image with films like Last Action Hero. This 1993 effort (read: it’s an effort to watch) was intended as a sort of film within a film; the dreadful result is more a film without a film. Subsequent comedies like Junior, in which he became the first man to give birth, miscarried at the box office. When the news leaked in 1997 that Arnold had undergone surgery...

...good listeners operate from a totally different paradigm. They feel important because they are entrusted with the power to humiliate the speaker. It is a real honor to be one of the select few who know exactly with whom Sally hooked up last week. Similarly, it is a real ego-boost to be the designated adviser. When someone seeks advice from you, they are admitting that you may have a superior perspective, better than theirs at solving a particular problem. Why else would people be willing to sit for hours on end in the dining hall, listening to yet another...

...December call, with even the Israeli military acknowledging that a period of relative calm had followed. That, of course, was because the militants of Arafat's own Fatah organization and also radical Islamist groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, had signed on. But in the absence of any paradigm-shifting breakthrough, the respite was always going to be temporary. ...Black Hawk Down begins with a quotation from T.S. Eliot: "All our ignorance brings us closer to death." By the light of its flash-bang grenades, this movie seeks to banish some of that darkness. It offers a paradigm of what war in the 21st century is going to be--modernism run amuck as it defends itself against primitivism, innocence savagely fragmented in incomprehensible combat. Black Hawk Down makes that point without preachment, in precise and pitiless imagery. And for that reason alone it takes its place on the very short list of the unforgettable movies about...

...hope that what Lance Morrow described as our new "homeland," in which we have united against a common enemy, isn't true [ESSAY, Nov. 19]. Flag waving and appreciating police officers in our New Paradigm are wonderful, but how can Morrow say Sept. 11 has brought about "united diversity" and then remark that people want to send Detroit's entire Muslim community back where it came from? He may claim that this represents political incorrectness, which would have been censured under the Old Paradigm, but this is beyond that. It is pure racism. I don't want to go back...
