Died. Otto Kerner, 67, two-term former Democratic Governor of Illinois (1961-68) and federal judge, who was considered to be a paragon of political integrity until 1973, when he was convicted of conspiracy, mail fraud, income-tax evasion and lying to a grand jury; in Chicago. Kerner was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals by President Johnson in 1968. He had gained national attention that year as chairman of the President's National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, which concluded that the U.S. was becoming an increasingly dichotomized society-one part prospering white, the other poor...

...paragon of journalistic gravitas, no newspaper can match the Sunday New York Times, all 4½ lbs., 450 pages and 500,000 words-give or take a few thousands-of it. Indeed, the city's sanitation department once estimated it cost New York $6 million annually just to dispose of the Sunday Times poundage. Keep is a perfect stand-in for a young Jimmy Stewart. As Clarence, he woos and wins the governess (Marian Clarke) in a scene of wonderfully evasive romanticism couched in a discussion of beetles and beetle scholars (Clarence turns...

...Paulina the queen's lady-in-waiting, cowed by nobody. She is one of drama's supreme steamrollers, telling off the king to his face, later functioning as his conscience and orchestrating the finale. Florence Reed, whose Paulina electrified audiences in the theater guild production, will forever remain the paragon. This time, Bette Henritze invokes plenty of strength; her voice is a trifle monotonous, but this is admirable work all the same...
