...Mann says that the job of the U.S. "is to convince Latin Americans that their interests lie parallel to ours-not because of sentiment, but in their own self-interest. Democracy is a tie in these cases, economics is a tie, and Christianity is another tie." All those things that have been said are half truths. Economics cannot be a tie if the prices of our raw materials continually decrease while the prices of your manufactured goods continually increase. Democracy and the idea of constitutional government cannot be a tie when dictatorships, unfortunately, now govern more than six countries...

Persistence of sectarianism is promoted strongly by the "conspiracy of silence" or so-called "religious toleration." There is a deadly parallel between the "conspiracy of silence" on sectarianism today with the "conspiracy of silence" on the "social diseases" a few years ago. So long as people were "too nice" to mention gonorrhea and syphilis, these diseases went largely untreated and ate away at countless victims. ...what your country stands. But there's another kind-xenophobic nationalism. This is what can impede the achievement of the Alianza goals: xenophobic nationalism tears down all that the hemisphere stands for. When people in this hemisphere believe that their country's interests lie on a parallel course with another-like ours-then we have a coincidence of interest. And that is the only means for solid understanding...

...disqualified for missing a gate. That was just a tune-up. Next day, in the giant slalom-a combination slalom and downhill that demands sheer straightaway speed as well as maneuverability-Jean snowed everybody under. Purists noted that her skis were too far apart and not quite parallel as she swooshed through the gates. But they could hardly fault the results: paying no attention to the ice, pumping furiously to get more speed, flipping through the gates so closely that she grazed the poles, Jean flashed down the 1,200-yd. course in 1 min. 37 sec., nearly...
