...This is touchy stuff, partly because "the race card" is not always, so to speak, a black-and-white issue. New York governor David Paterson recently accused Republicans of using "community organizer" as a subtle racial put-down; that seems hypersensitive to the point of paranoia. Obama was a community organizer, and his opponents should be able to criticize him without being accused of race baiting. But it's tricky when the attacks wander into the neighborhood of racial stereotypes, like the McCain "Celebrity" ad linking Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, which had a whiff of lock...
Wallace committed suicide on Friday, at the age of 46. He might be remembered as the guy who brought footnotes back (his fiction is full of them), or the person who magnified Thomas Pynchon's reader-reaction paranoia into post-modern mega-epic. He did do those things. But Wallace was also the greatest horror novelist ever. In Infinite Jest a corporation-run unified North America of the near-future (dates have been replaced by sponsor names, such as the Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar) is being decimated by a videotape so entertaining that people watch...
...saints, its Janus heads. They expressed the show's continuing, contradictory catchphrases: "I Want to Believe" and "Trust No One." Each Sunday night at nine, the series would juggle the concepts of blind faith (the need to find meaning and pattern in the random events of the universe) and paranoia (which, as any neurotic would tell you, is just common sense accompanied by theremin music). Hip and weird, and reveling in the emotional voyeurism at the heart of any detective show, The X Files spanned the Bill Clinton Era - or, roughly, the time between the two attacks on the World...
...Borneo, he is a reminder of instincts caged but not tamed by civilization. That such a creature has much to teach can be even more upsetting. So it is not the natives who are restless. Fairley, the harmless handyman of the good-hearted family that shelters him, stirs paranoia among the ignorant and the intolerant. Like the branches of their clans who thrived on slave labor in the American South, these early Queenslanders worry about uprisings and the loss of racial identity...
...Sure enough, the plunge soon halted, and on Friday the Dow stormed back 36.06 points--its eighth-best day ever--to close the week at 1874.19. What really jolted the nerves of Wall Streeters, though, was the fallout from the Dennis Levine insider-trading scandal, the worst in history. Paranoia swept the close-knit investment community a week after Levine, 33, a former managing director at the firm of Drexel Burnham Lambert, pleaded guilty to criminal charges of income tax evasion, securities fraud and perjury and settled a civil suit charging that he had made $12.6 million in illegal stock...
