Your report on organized militias in the U.S. [COVER, May 8] was both interesting and alarming. To think that people have become so paranoid that they believe the United Nations is trying to take over the U.S.! Those in the militias who blame the Federal Government, immigrants and the U.N. for their problems need to come to grips with reality...

...malevolent" federal government. Numerous FBI agents were reprimanded for their actions in Waco. In Idaho, a white supremacist's cabin was surrounded and his wife and son were shot because he failed to appear in court for a minor weapons violation. If fringe groups in the U.S. are paranoid, they may have frighteningly legitimate reasons...

Unfortunately, many conspiracy theorists don't have workplaces with which to appreciate this analogy. And anyway, giving far too much credit to one's enemies is a hallmark of the paranoid mind-set. This would explain the theory, in vogue among certain Bill Clinton haters, that a cabal of White House aides murdered Vincent Foster, the President's deputy counsel, and not only managed to make the killing look like a suicide but also persuaded numerous fbi agents and members of the U.S. Park Police to join in on the cover-up-all in all, a nifty feat...

These people are far beyond the scope of my beliefs. Paranoid anarchists have very little, if anything, in common with mainstream Americans of a conservative stripe. Tougher law enforcement is a hallmark issue with most conservatives and Republicans, and we favor greater empowerment of federal authorities to nail these fiends before they have a chance to strike again...

What the paranormal productions have most in common is a paranoid distrust of government, nasa officials, legitimate scientists and, in general, the Establishment. All these institutions and groups, in the opinion of many of the paranormalists, are engaged in vast cover-ups, keeping the public ignorant about the aliens who pilot UFOS, kidnap humans and create structures and monuments on Mars and the moon. "We make a lot of hay about the idea that there is a mistrust of government," admits Chris Carter, executive producer of The X-Files. "One of our mantras on The X-Files is 'trust...
