This week one statistic told the whole impressive story: West Berlin food authorities handed out the two-millionth parcel to a needy East German. ...week long the Communist overlords sought an effective answer to this commonplace but treasured little parcel. They spread rumors; they issued warnings;they made a few arrests; they seized thousands of food packages; they appealed to pride. They tried force. Twice they sent flying columns of 1,000 or more bullyboys to West Berlin food centers to taunt the long, patient lines of East Germans. "Yankee bootlickers!" they cried. "Down with Ami beggar parcels!" With clubs and high-pressure hoses cops drove them away...
Beggar Programs. But neither threat nor ruse stopped the invasion. The East Germans poured into West Berlin and out again, carrying their two pounds of lard, bags of dried beans, peas and flour, and four cans of condensed milk. All together, each parcel was worth about $1,15-not much by Western standards, but plainly a treasure to East Germans. Most came with identity cards of all their family, and some few friends besides, and got a parcel for each one. "I paid 28 marks for my train ticket," said one bedraggled housewife from deep in the Soviet zone...

Some fifty women of assorted ages had been waiting all day at Boston's Logan Airport. When the plane landed, the women, joined by reporters, photographers, bystanders and a parcel of schoolchildren touring the airport, broke through the barriers and streamed out toward the blue-trimmed DC-3. On the plane's side was the neatly printed legend CAPTAIN ARTHUR GODFREY. Pilot Godfrey promptly took off again, leaving his flock of fans in a cloud of dust, propwash and indignation.
