Romney's Slice. During the afternoon of Jan. 10, Burns solicited the help of George Romney, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. As they talked, Burns urged Romney to help lead a new effort to pare federal spending. The following Monday, Romney met with John Ehrlichman, Nixon's assistant for domestic affairs. Romney laid out a scheme for further across-the-board cuts in the budget, saying that his department would take a reduction as high as 5% if other Cabinet-level agencies did. Knowing that the President had his own misgivings about the budget, Ehrlichman took Romney...
Like Ben, Abram S. Ginnes' manic screenplay brims with hellishly good intentions that never quite come off. Jewison has thus been forced to pare his film drastically. Plot and continuity skip along in a flurry of quick cuts and undeveloped skits. Perhaps it is just as well. Hecht was invariably sodden with sentimentality except when he wrote with a collaborator-as in The Front Page. In editing Gaily, Gaily, Jewison has played a latter-day Charles MacArthur to Hecht's Hecht...
Last week in Paris, France's shopkeepers staged their biggest demonstration yet. Some 25,000 grocers and hoteliers, barbers and plumbers, from as far away as Corsica, crowded into the Pare des Princes stadium to protest stiff taxes and rising competition from modern large-scale retailers. They carried banners proclaiming "Crushed to Death by the Taxman" and "We Want to Live." Some wanted to fight, too. Swarming through the streets, 2,000 of them attacked police in a 45-minute fracas that ended in 30 injuries and 13 arrests. It was the worst clash since the May 1968 riots...
Central Gulf and Lykes officials predict that their barge-carrying ships will pare the round-trip time on transatlantic voyages by half, to 30 days. Since transfers of cargo between barges and oceangoing ships will be eliminated, they also expect the vessels to cut shippers' breakage and pilferage costs, and to reduce the heavy investments many shippers must now make in warehouses and dock facilities...
Only Right. Carmakers grant rebates to dealers on autos sold during the cleanup. The average rebate is $200, but it can run much higher on expensive models. This bonus is what enables dealers to pare prices in late summer. It is only right that the buyer pay a lower price than usual because a car sold late in the model year has already suffered a good deal of depreciation; in a few weeks it will be "last year's car," worth about $700 less for a compact and $2,000 less for some luxury models. During the next...
